Process Overview

The details matter.

Our Process for New Racking Projects

Undertaking a new racking project involves several crucial steps to ensure the system meets the operational needs of the warehouse and maximizes space efficiency. We work closely with each customer to explore and thoroughly complete the following steps to deliver results that are safer, last longer, and achieve our collective goals for safety and performance:

Assess Needs and Goals

  • Inventory Analysis: Determine the types of all pallets utilized along with the quantities of products to be stored, their dimensions, weights, and turnover rates.
  • Operational Requirements: Consider the frequency of access needed, FIFO or LIFO inventory management, and any specific storage conditions like temperature control.

Space and Layout Planning

  • Warehouse Layout: Measure the available space, including ceiling height, and note any obstacles like columns, doors, or existing equipment.
  • Flow Optimization: Plan for efficient workflow, including aisles for forklift access and pedestrian pathways. Ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Select the Right Racking System

  • System Choice: Based on the inventory and operational needs, choose the most suitable racking system (e.g., selective, drive-in, push-back, pallet flow, cantilever).
  • Material and Design: Decide on the materials (e.g., steel, galvanized) and the design specifications that best suit the load requirements and environment.

Budgeting and Product Selection

  • Cost Estimation: Create a detailed budget that includes racking, installation, and any additional equipment or accessories.
  • Delivery Affirmation: Ensure timelines can be met with selections based on customer requirements.

Detailed Design and Engineering

  • Custom CAD Design: Work to finalize the racking design, ensuring it meets all safety and operational requirements. CAD drawings are shared with the customer for visual confirmation of space and design.
  • Engineering & Customer Approvals: Designs are reviewed and PE stamped when required for permits and/or heavy loads or seismic considerations. Customer approvals are then conducted to ensure everyone is in agreement before proceeding.

Permits and Regulations

  • Compliance: Ensure the racking system complies with local building codes and safety regulations.
  • Permits: Assist in obtaining necessary permits if necessary or requested.

Installation Planning

  • Installation Plan: Develop a detailed installation plan that includes timelines, responsibilities, and safety protocols.
  • Professional Installers: Schedule our experienced installers to ensure the racking is assembled correctly and safely.

Installation

  • Site Preparation: Clear the installation area and prepare the site.
  • Assembly: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for assembling the racking system. Ensure all components are securely fitted, plumb, and level.
  • Safety Checks: Conduct thorough safety inspections during and after installation to ensure structural integrity and safety compliance.

Testing and Quality Assurance

  • Inspection: Perform a final inspection to verify that the installation meets all design and safety specifications. We ensure all anchors are properly in-place, beams are properly connected, and that safety clips are secured.
  • Testing: Functional tests are performed; all designs and capacities are RMI certified for safety and performance (see certificate).

Training and Documentation

  • Staff Training: Train warehouse staff on the proper use of the new racking system, including safety procedures including ongoing maintenance requirements such as inspections and repairs.
  • Documentation: Provide detailed documentation, including load ratings, maintenance guidelines, and emergency procedures.

Conclusion

By following this structured process, Racking Pros ensures a successful racking project that optimizes warehouse space, improves operational efficiency, and maintains high safety standards.
